Both parents have been feeding the young brood. The male bird passes food to the female to feed the young ones.

All six chicks are still in the box. They spent the night by themselves for the first time. The sun is shining today for the first time in ages and the parent birds are making vaiant attempts to get the chicks out of the nest box. Tempting food is brought to the mouth of the box and the chicks are able to fly to the mouth but lack the courage to leave. The parent birds eventually bring some food into the nest box.

This heron was caught fishing in the Water of Leith behind the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

First three chicks hatched around 5pm today. The first two were captured below.

As each chick hatched, the female Great Tit ate the egg shell and the male Great Tit flew back and forth to the nest box bringing the female food. The male enters the nest box and also feeds the newly hatched chicks.

I won’t pretend the heron was in my garden! These shots of the heron and chaffinch were taken during a walk round Arthurs Seat. The heron was spotted at the edge of Dunsapie Loch.
